Richard Francis Cutts died Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA.

Richard was born on July 28, 1945 in Savannah and was Baptized at the St. John Basilica.  Richard would spend his entire life in his beloved Savannah, except for the two years in Athens while he attended the University of Georgia, and throughout his life would wonder why anyone would ever want to move away.

Richard was the only child of Francis Willet Cutts of Brooklyn, NY and Mary Virginia Hodge of Savannah.  He grew up with his mother and maternal grandparents, Dr. John E. Hodge, Sr. and Irene Buckley in their Ardsley Park family home, spending his happy childhood playing with friends in the neighborhood parks.

Richard attended Sacred Heart School (1-8), Richard Arnold Junior High (9), and Savannah High School (10-12), where he played on the varsity basketball team and graduated in 1963.  He attended Armstrong Junior College for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia from which he graduated in 1967 with a degree in Political Science.  Plans to enter Mercer Law School were thwarted by the Vietnam War, so instead he headed to Officer Candidate School before joining the Georgia 117th Air National Guard, Radar Unit (1968-75).  Richard was employed for over 40 years as a successful salesman, working for several companies before finishing his career with 17 years in durable medical equipment sales.

In 1994 Richard married his soulmate Beth, and together “RC and BC” embarked on a wonderful life full of love, fun, world travels (including Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Russia, and all over Europe and the Americas), sporting events, and gatherings with their family members and many wonderful friends.  Richard was a people person-- with his big heart, booming laugh, and bottomless reservoir of sayings and “RCisms” running the gamut from mischievous to wise, he was the life of many a party at the Ardsley Park home they built together.  Over the years he had several furry companions in terriers Winston, Buckley, and Bixby, with whom he was inseparable.  Richard was a walking sports almanac, and as an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the L.A. Dodgers was apt to say “before I bled Dawg red, I bled Dodger blue.”

In addition to his wife Elizabeth Lanier Cutts, Richard is survived by:  son Dr. Yates Russell Brown (Dr. Rima Ash) of San Francisco, and grandchildren Adeline and Callen; son Richard Chase Cutts (Anne) of Charlotte, and grandchildren Avery and Logan; and half-sister Francine Perry of Virginia.

My only misfortune was to meet Richard, or "Sir Richard" as I dubbed him, so late in life. Fortunately, though, we were next door neighbors ("It's a short drive he always joked!") and were able to exchange visits, invitations, and telephone conversations with some regularity. Richard was a kind-hearted, warm, and generous person, who, though he didn't suffer fools, was always willing to listen to contending arguments even if he didn't agree. He could be prickly, but in the end his robust sense of humor...and accompanying thunderous laughter...would always win out. We talked a lot about baseball, and it was with perennial disappointment that our longed-for Dodgers/Yankees World Series rematch would vanish as each season progressed. The self-styled "Lord Major of Nowhere" will remain in our hearts and minds everywhere.

Richard was one of the liveliest persons I’ve ever known. I’ll never forget all of the UGA games and the Sugar Bowl trip to New Orleans.
